Rise of the Tomb Raider Review



Short review:

The good things I can say about this game is its combat and progression system.

However, the story and voice acting really ruined it for me.

The combat system is great! It is a combination of long range, close range, crafting, and stealth. For long range, the game gives the many options and customizations. For close range, it uses dodging as a part of core combat system. For crafting, it was applied to all weapons and also giving resources a purpose. For stealth, the player can always use the environments to create more combat options. All four system works at the same time to create a great combat experience.

The progression system is also great! Throughout the game, I am constantly unlocking new weapons, crafting items, and new mechanics. The player experience is always new and fresh. The only thing is that some of the later abilities are overpowered, but it is fun none the less.

The only bad thing about this game is its narrative. The characters are weak and their motivations are unrelatable and unclear at times. The story arc is really predictable. The voice acting is terrible and doesn't fit the character. You can tell the game dev was focused on the gameplay and made the story to enhance the gameplay, but it just ends up ruining the gameplay too. I didn't care about any of the characters throughout the game, and that made the game less fun because my action in the game is the opposite of what I really want in the story. This shows just how important narrative is in a game. There was no memorable part in the story for me. This is the difference between Tomb Raider and Uncharted, one is focused on the gameplay, one is focused on the narrative. I prefer the narrative more.
